BREAKING BOUNDARIES - THE POWER OF WHEELCHAIR DANCE
When we set out to create Breaking Boundaries, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the incredible organisations across Yorkshire that are genuinely transforming lives for people with disabilities. Our latest episode with Northern Ballet's In Motion programme is a perfect example of why this mission matters so much.
Picture this: a Saturday morning at Northern Ballet, where wheelchair users of all abilities come together in a friendly environment to discover the joy of dancing. That's what In Motion is all about.
Over the course of ten weeks, dance artists Kim and Catrina guide participants in this class to discover new ways to move and express themselves through dance.
What Makes In Motion Special?
What struck us most during our visit was how genuinely inclusive this class truly is. Whether using a manual or powered wheelchair, dancers are encouraged to move in ways that work for them. And we were even encouraged to get involved ourselves!
With Catrina herself being a wheelchair user, she brings real-life experience to the class. Kim and Catrina don't just teach dance, they create an environment where the dancers feel safe, welcomed, and free to be themselves.
Ellie, one of the dancers, captured it perfectly: "I didn't think I could dance in a wheelchair… but it's such a friendly group. Kim and Catrina make you feel so comfortable and welcome, they adapt everything to suit you."
That's the real power of inclusive spaces, when you remove the barriers, people surprise themselves.
The Showcase That Celebrates Everyone
At the end of the ten weeks comes Expressions, a showcase that brings together dancers from across Yorkshire.. It's more than just a performance; it's a celebration of courage, creativity, and community.
Why This Matters
At Independence Mobility, we believe that true impact goes beyond what we deliver, it's about giving back to the communities we work with.
Through Breaking Boundaries, we are celebrating these spaces where people with disabilities can connect, build confidence, and discover new opportunities. We're showcasing what happens when organisations genuinely commit to inclusion, and honestly, it’s so inspiring to see.
If you have ever wondered what inclusive dance looks like, or if you know someone who would love to try wheelchair dancing, we would love for you to check out this feature. You can hear directly from the dancers themselves about their experiences and the impact this programme has had on their lives.
